Will you be Banned off Facebook Next!

It doesn’t matter how many times you tell people about Facebook’s Promotional Guidelines AND that they need to adhere to them when it comes to running a Promotion or Contest, people still try and pretend they don’t apply to them!

giveawayfundraiserI recently saw a Page running a Giveaway with all proceeds going to a Disaster Relief Fund.

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m all for a good cause but how they are going about it is putting, not only their page, but the others involved at risk of being banned off Facebook.

To participate in this Networking Giveaway, all you have do is  “To enter please comment under each picture …..”  and they randomly pick out a person to win the prize.  Now this is where the fun begins, after your name is picked, you pay $1, I guess this is the donation part!

But seriously, if this is really a fundraiser isn’t the idea to raise as much money as possible for a cause?  Not just use it as a disguise to try and trick Facebook into believing its not a contest and ignoring the Promotional Guidelines?

By now you might be saying “Hey Donna”, I cannot see anything wrong with what they are doing.  It’s for a good cause, everyone is getting on board and supporting it.   You are correct they are, and in the meantime they are cheating you and I and the hundreds and thousands of other businesses on Facebook who know that to run a Promotion or Contest that there are rules to follow.

The Guidelines clearly state: Promotions on Facebook must be administered within Apps on Facebook.com, either on a Canvas Page or a Page App.

[This means you are not allowed to run a promotion on your wall, as they have done in this contest YOU MUST use  Contest App to do so].

And don’t get me started about Rule iv.    You must not use Facebook features or functionality as a promotion’s registration or entry mechanism. For example, the act of liking a Page or checking in to a Place cannot automatically register or enter a promotion participant.]

In case you want to argue its a Giveaway and not a Contest …. take a look at the definitions a.    By “administration” we mean the operation of any element of the promotion, such as collecting entries, conducting a drawing, judging entries, or notifying winners.

I personally don’t like my chances, statistics tells me that if I didn’t follow the Guidelines … I would be the one in a hundred that gets their page shutdown.

So my question to everyone reading this post, is the idea of this Giveaway to raise much needed funds for “Disaster Relief”?  Or was it a sneaky way to raise awareness of their Page to get as much free publicity as they can at the expense of all those unsuspecting businesses who gave them a gift for this Giveaway?  I am guessing these businesses gave them a gift, in the hope they might raise their social proof and drive customers to their Page.

If you are thinking, “This Page probably had no idea it was running a Promotion against the Promotional Guidelines”…  This Page has over 12,000 Likers so I am sure they have been told many many times that running such a promotion is against the Guidelines.

Oh and don’t let me forget, that if you think participating in such contests, won’t affect you – THINK AGAIN – here’s  just one person who was banned off Facebook for participating in this Giveaway.

As a business owner who gave a prize to such a Giveaway – you too run the risk of having your Page shutdown as your having people LIKE your page as a condition of entry of this Giveaway !!

I don’t know about you !!!  But why on earth would you run the risk of having your page shut down to gain some short term exposure from people “who probably will never come back again” because they are only there for the $1 prize !

Word of advice for all those businesses who so willingly gave away a prize in this “Giveaway”, run a Promotion or Contest on your own Page (follow the Promotional Guidelines) build your own social proof and at the very least you’ll be rewarded with a list of people who want to engage in your business and might just want to be YOUR customers!
