Facebook Time Line Cover Compliance

Facebook have made a small but significant change to the Page Guidelines. As a regularly visitor to the Guidelines, I saw this change a week or so ago, but thought I had made a mistake as there was no way Facebook would remove some of those Rules!

Guidelines can be found here ===> http://www.facebook.com/page_guidelines.php

The change will affect your Time Line Cover for your Business Pages. Until recently this is what the Guidelines for Covers stated:

i. images with more than 20% text;
ii. price or purchase information, such as “40% off” or “Download it on socialmusic.com”;
iii. contact information such as a website address, email, mailing address, or information that should go in your Page’s “About” section;
iv. references to Facebook features or actions, such as “Like” or “Share” or an arrow pointing from the cover photo to any of these features; or
v. calls to action, such as “Get it now” or “Tell your friends.”

The new and improved Guidelines for Covers now state (changes effective from 6th March 2013):

B. Cover
All covers are public. This means that anyone who visits your Page will be able to see your cover. Covers can’t be deceptive, misleading, or infringe on anyone else’s copyright. You may not encourage people to upload your cover to their personal timelines. Covers may not include images with more than 20% text.

There’s a lot of speculation as to whether you can have a call to actions and indeed whether you can now ask people to Like and Share on your Time Line Cover. I guess only time will tell if Facebook made a slip or in fact those Rules have been abolished altogether.

**Update 2/4/2013 :  It would appear this is in fact correct and that the only rule is the 20% requirement.  This is great news as we can now use the Cover to drive people to your Contests !!!!

The number 1 question that everyone is asking is …… “How do we know if we meet this 20% requirement?”

Here is an image which highlights how small the 20% Rule really is.  The areas in blue is what represents 20% of the image.

No doubt that all makes total sense to you and you have checked your Time Line Cover and know that it meets the Guidelines !!

Ok, if you are like me and have no idea how to squash your text into these image sizes then you’ll be happy with what I found whilst doing a search for the Rule Image.

This super easy ‘CoverPhoto’ tool requires you to insert the full URL of your Facebook Page and then you simply click on any areas that have text on them on your Time Line Cover … and bingo, it will tell you whether you are compliant or not.

How easy is that !

Here’s what you need to do:

Type in your Facebook Page URL in the text box and click “Load Cover Photo” – ie. https: www.facebook.com/fanpagecompetitions

  • NEXT Click on the boxes with text in them and the total percentage will be calculated (Tip the image size is calculated on is 640px X 310px which is smaller than my image size so you may need to make allowances for this.)

Here are my results …. clearly I need to update my Time Line Cover!

If you’re like me, and your text is much larger than the new 20% rules – then we have some work to do to become complaint !

Feel free to share this posts with your Page to encourage everyone to sort out this new change !
